History of GPKUG Fan Sets

This post will serve as a quick history of the GPK Fan Sets. The purpose of this post is to acquaint collectors with the Fan Sets so that if they become interested in collecting them, they know what to look for.

The Garbage Pail Kids Underground (GPKUG) Fan sets began in 2011. There has been a total of 9 Fan Sets.

Fan Set 1 / FS1

Notes: At some point after FS1 shipped, another card featuring Travellin’ Travis was created. The card was numbered x/100 and was sent to everyone that purchased a FS1. Additional cards were sent to other GPK collectors. Some unnumbered Travellin’ Travis cards also made it into circulation.

Extras: 2 Promo Cards. **Both Promo Cards featured Adam Bomb on the front. The back of the first promo card was printed upside down so a second promo card was also produced. Both types of promo cards are in circulation.

Notes: Fan Set 3 was the first fan set to come wrapped in packs. FS3 came wrapped in yellow wax packs. A piece of “Final Art” was also produced by GPK Artist Dustin Graham for this set. The character on the Final Art was the character on the wax packs.

** A cancelled Bonus Card featuring an Alien Front / Alternat Award Back was initially printed for FSV. The Bonus Card was scrapped in favor of the Alien Front / Anal Probe Back. A very limited number of these rare 1st Print Run Award Back bonus cards made it into circulation.

Notes: Fan Set 5 came wrapped in cello packs. The set consisted of 6 cello packs, five cards per pack, for a complete 30 card set. A limited number of full sheets were also made available to collectors.

A strange thing happened after Fan Set 6. Instead of being produced by the members of GPKUG, a mysterious group of individuals took over. They started branding the Fan Sets as “Black Market Trading Company Fan Sets.” Although the identities of individuals involved with the Black Market Trading Company are unknown, they have maintained the same high quality standards as the previous Fan Sets.

Notes: Fan Set 7 came with two different packaging options. The first option consisted of six cello packs, 5 cards per pack with a piece of gum in each pack. The second option was a cello ‘Jumbo’ style pack that had all 30 cards and a header card wrapped in clear cellophane. The header card featured Ada Bomb. 100 sets of each packaging style were produced.

Notes: Fan Set 8 came 41 cards to a “Jumbo” cello style pack. There were 3 variation packs available; Roy Bot, Hippie Skippy and Mugged Marcus. 100 packs of each character were produced.

Notes: Fan Set 9, better known as Fan Set 1 Redux (FS1-R), was produced to allow people who may not have had a chance to purchase FS1 in 2011 the opportunity to have these cards. The backs FS1-R were completely changed from the 2011 FS1 version. A set of 3 Bonus Cards came with the first 47 sets sold to commemorate the original 47 sets of FS1 produced in 2011.

Notes: As you may know, the Original Japanese Bukimi Kun Set and Israeli Havurat Hazevel sets mirrored each other. Each set contained the same exact 168 cards with characters from OS1, 2, 3 and 6. Unfortunately the Japanese Bukimi Kun line ended after the first release. Israeli Havurat Hazevel continued to make a 2^nd and 3^rd series. The Israeli 2nd series consisted of 209 cards from the USA OS4, OS5, OS7, OS8 and OS9 Garbage Pail Kids releases.

Bukimi Kun Series 2 contained all 209 cards (numbered 401-609) in the Israeli Havurat Hazevel Second series release along with 6 extra cards. The extra cards consisted of a P1 card of Dough Boyd (interestingly the only OS5 card not in Havurat Hazevel 2nd series), a censored No Number Semi Colin, and four additional censored cards.

The Bukimi Kun Series 2 release came in a shrink wrapped box featuring Bony Tony. Inside the box is a shrink wrapped stack of 215 cards.

Notes: FS2-R consists of the same 42 card FS2 set but includes updated card backs. FS2-R comes in small UK/Garbage Gang/Australia/Test Set style packs!

Each set consists of 14 packs, 3 cards per pack for a complete 42 card set. Each pack also contains gum.

Notes: Polska Grupa Smieci from Poland. The set consists of 30 cards with a header card inside of a jumbo pack. The cards are mini-size (think U.K. sized) and this is the first every mini sized jumbo pack ever created.

Fan Set 13 / Black Market Prototype Sticker Set

Notes: Black Market Trading Cards was attempting to product a chrome-style set of cards. These prototypes were ordered to see the various finishes. A minimum order of 30 cards of each style was in place. The sets were hand stamped with the Black Market logo on the reverse of each card. The finishes were Rainbow, Prism, Transparent, Brushed Aluminum, Sparkle, and Mirror.

Notes: Black Market Trading Cards was attempting to produce a chrome-style set of cards. These prototypes were ordered to see specifically the mirror finish. A minimum order of 50 cards of each style was in place. The sets were hand stamped with the Black Market logo on the reverse of each card. The finish was Mirror.

The first 50 sets sold also received the Bea Sting Black Ops promo Card for FS XVI Black Ops.

Notes: Fan Set 14 was the first fan set to arrive during the FS 10^th Anniversary Celebration. FS14 was the first fan set to include a QR Code link the GPKUG.com **Included on all cards and the label**. Features a return to the jewel hinged case for use on a fan set for the first time since FS6. First fan set intended to be interactive **People able to vote for winners of the 9 individual rap battles the character with the highest vote tally will become the Promo Card for Yo! UG Raps Series 2. The remaining battlers would be included in Series 2 competing against new characters**.

The first 50 sets sold also received the Adam Mania Fuggs Promo Card Fugg Off.

Notes: Fan Set 15 was the second fan set to arrive during the FS 10^th Anniversary Celebration. Included in this set are the first glimpses of 22 future GPKUG fan sets that will be released. Each set comes sealed in a slider box with a special holographic label in honor of FS XIII! This is the first and only set completely focused on one specific character. This was the first set to be offered as a pre-order.

Fan Set 16/ FS XVI

Extras: 1 Promo Card. Promo card is the DoND X UG 1^st ever promo for 2021.
The first fan set to feature to different labels since the change from header cards. 50 cases are labeled with the redacted label and 50 cases with the now familiar fan set label. Each set included the alternate label to what was on the case. Anyone who purchased 2 sets received one of each version. Anyone who purchased a single set received a randomly labeled set. The first fan set from the UG to include a custom pin only given to the first 50 purchasers.

Notes: Fan Set 16 was the third and final fan set to arrive during the FS 10^th Anniversary Celebration. Each set comes in a slider box with a special holographic label in honor of FS XIII! This was the first set to have a pin included as promo. First set to have variant label packaging. First set to be based off what was originally a promo card.
